Line 643 is the most interesting of the "emergency" post-earthquake lines run in 1994. LADOT contracted with SuperShuttle -- yes, the blue airport vans -- to operate between the hastily-completed Sylmar/San Fernando Station and employment centers in Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks. Service operated southbound in morning peak-hours (with six erratically scheduled* trips leaving Sylmar between 5:45am and 9:20am) with northbound return service in afternoon peak-hours (six equally erratically scheduled* trips leaving Sherman Oaks between 3:10pm and 6:10pm). (* - The spacing of trips varied from 15 to 35 minutes, with an odd 75-minute gap between the 6:45am and 8:00am trips and a similar gap between the 3:55pm and 5:10pm trips, and a wider gap in the morning between the 8:00am and 9:20am trips. I presume this was to coordinate with the Metrolink schedule.) In the morning, passengers could board only at Sylmar/San Fernando Station discharging only at specified Line 560 stops between Panorama City and Sherman Oaks (note the similarity to the later Line 561 -- and present Metro Rapid Line 761 -- routing and limited stops). On the afternoon trips, passengers could board at any of the morning discharge stops for the return trips to Sylmar/San Fernando Station. (Of course, they had to spot a SuperShuttle van sporting a black-and-white Metro decal first!)Line 643 was free, but only by showing Metrolink fare media; one would have had to either purchase a round-trip ticket in the morning or carry a Metrolink pass to ride the afternoon return service. There was no provision made for a cash fare or to honor MTA (or even LADOT) monthly passes. It was not a rousing success, operating only from February 3 to February 17. |
