LADOT's Foothill Shuttle
One of LADOT's more interesting service concepts was the Foothill Shuttle. Begun in October, 1994 as an expansion of the "dial-a-ride" CityRide paratransit service, it operated on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in the Sunland-Tujunga area, and was only available to seniors and disabled patrons who "paid" with the CityRide paratransit scrip.
The service operated westbound every hour from 8:00am until 4:00pm on Foothill Blvd., with about a half-dozen "fixed" stops along the route (shown on the map as small black triangles) combined with the traditional paratransit "route deviation" (the shaded area of the map) to pick up or let off passengers at their homes. Where the Foothill Shuttle differed was that eastbound service on Foothill Blvd. only operated during even hours; during odd hours the service operated via the 210 freeway to Verdugo Hills Hospital (the dashed purple line on the map) and started the next westbound trip from there. This unusual schedule, however, allowed the service to run with a single vehicle, because the time saved by using the freeway was enough for the trips to the hospital without delaying the next westbound trip.
Similar CityRide shuttles were attempted around the same time in the Park La Brea and Monterey Hills areas of Los Angeles. The Foothill Shuttle was canceled in 1997; the Park La Brea shuttle eventually became DASH Fairfax. In Monterey Hills, the CityRide Via Marisol Shuttle is still operating, although without route deviation.
